Everyday I Learn A Little More About Love
Perhaps it's my background in counseling. Maybe it's my commitment to meet others with an open heart. Either way, I know that part of my life's work is to help fill the world with love. It sounds kind of funny. But really. I'm so blessed.
Beautiful babies come and visit me in the studio. I love everything about their squishy faces, and their amazing little expressions. I don't mind taking breaks so they can eat, snuggle, and get their diapers changed.
I do a lot of little things to keep these sweet little souls content. I have a heating pad that warms up the blankets so babies are comfortable when we photograph them. I have a white noise maker, and I make sure that all of my bows, hats, and headbands are soft and made from gentle materials.
Sometimes, despite all of these little ways I care for each child, a baby isn't happy and only wants to be held.
There are so many reasons that babies and mamas can't be together. Photography isn't one of them.
When a baby doesn't settle in, we simply make the mom part of the background. I cover the mama's lap in a soft blanket, and I let her hold her child. I can see these little babies settle into their mama's arms. I would rather embrace the bond between a mother and her child than push for a particular portrait style that doesn't match a baby's needs.
What does this have to do with filling the world with love? Everything.
It tells new moms that it is okay to love without limits. It tells tiny little babies that their needs will be met. It fills my heart with peace to see moms and babies together.
This beautiful little angel was one of the babies that wanted to be with her mom. So we gave her what she needed.
After her session, her mom told me that it can be hard for them to be apart. The baby was treated with jaundice and they had to be separated.
In a single moment, I realized that the mere act of keeping a mom and her baby together is an act of love. It was my way of telling this mother and child that their bond is beautiful.
Donielle, when we were together, I was touched by the calm, loving and tender-hearted relationship you have with your daughter. Thank you for the gentle ways you love your child. It warms my heart, and my time with the two of you filled my heart with more love to share.
Though there will always be times that we must be apart from the ones we love, I hope that you find your love reconnecting you back to your beautiful daughter. May your love for one another guide you in the wonderful times and also in the challenging times.
This is how love changes the world.
