Senior Year Memories: Blake Takes Center Stage
I sat down planning to come up with three words that best describe Blake. I remembered the way he joked and laughed during his session. I thought about the way he casually tossed the football up in the air. I remembered his warm smile and the way his confidence came though. I imaged much of his confidence was gained from being a part of the Chelsea High School football team. I smiled to myself as I remembered how respectfully Blake interacted with me and how much respect he had for his mom.
I tried to think of three words to describe Blake, but the truth is, I couldn't narrow it down. Instead I came up with:
Dedicated, Honest, Model (check out that first black and white senior photo!), Intelligent, Football, Bother, Son, Genuine, Respectful, Fun, Light-Hearted, Determined, Mosquitoes (listen, we were attacked by mosquitoes when we sat in the grass under a giant tree!!), Relaxed, Athletic, Loved
It's been such a delight getting to know Blake. He is easy to talk to, engaging, and fun to be around. I love the way he laughed with his brother, and I really, really loved that he was still willing to hug his mom.
When I asked Blake about his year, he didn't mention to me that he is graduating with honors, but his mom let me know, because moms stick together. And we love to brag about our sons. It's a Mom privilege.
Like so many others, I'm proud of Blake. It's not easy to balance work, school, friends, and sports. We expect high school students to be able to pull this off, but the truth is, it's something many adults continue to struggle with. Blake did a fantastic job, and all of his hard work is paying off.
His academic accomplishments are not the first time Blake has seen his hard work pay off. Throughout his time on the football team, Blake earned the respect of his teammates and made life long friends. When I asked him about his favorite senior year memory, he told me it was playing at Ford Field for the D3 State finals for Chelsea Football. Even though they didn't win, for Blake, it was still a great experience, and he appreciated the outstanding support from the community all season long.
Being part of a team, being part of a community, and being supported are such important experiences that can change the way we see ourselves. I am so glad that Blake had these opportunities during his senior year.
Before he graduates, Blake hopes to make memories with his friends that will last a lifetime. In the fall, he will be attending Grand Valley State University.
Blake, wishing you the best in everything you do. My your time at Ford Field, the love, the community, and the sense of victory stay with you and guide you for years to come.
Most sincerely,
Michelle Massey Barnes
