Meet Emily. She's in 6th grade, and she's already making the world a better place. Emily is building a business, and she is using the money she makes to buy sleeping bags for the homeless.
At first, her plan was to finger knit scarves. She giggled when she told me that "it was going to take an awful lot of finger knitting just to make one scarf!" I love it that this young girl is already optimizing her projects. (The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.)
She went on to explain that she found a new type of yarn, and it was going to be much easier to make scarves with this new yarn. Now that she is selling scarves (they are $5 each), she is putting her money to good use and working out an arrangement with REI for a discount code on sleeping bags.
Emily is full of personality and life. I love how she's reaching out to people she doesn't know and sharing love, compassion and warmth. I told her I admire her because she is compassionate. When I asked her if she knows what compassionate means, she said, "Does it mean I am a good person?"
"Emily," I said. "You were a good person before you starting buying sleeping bags for the homeless. In this case, compassionate means that you have a huge heart, and you are nothing short of amazing."
She looked at me and smiled. They was a slight pause in the conversation. I hope she was taking in my sincere compliment. Next she said, "Can I go play on the iPad now?" Still a kid at heart. I love it.
Shine bright, Emily. You are nothing short of amazing.
