Let's Talk About Awkward Hands
When I am photographing, I spend a lot of time adjusting and finessing hands. Over and over again, as I photograph people, they tell me they don't know what to do with their hands. It's true! I also don't know what to do with my hands when I am being photographed. As soon as a camera comes out, my hands feel awkward. I need someone to guide me as well.
Stiff hands are a telltale sign that you are uncomfortable, and poor hand placement can compromise an otherwise award winning portrait. My goal is soft, relaxed hands even when you don't feel relaxed. That is why you will hear me say things like "relax your fingers" or "soften your hands" many times during your session.
Most people aren't relaxed when they are being photographed (that's an understatement, right?!), and simple, kind directions are an important part of creating natural, beautiful portraits. When I help you and assure you that you look good on camera, it shows in your final portraits.
You might hear me say, "Oh let's do that again, but this time can you show me the side of your hand and not the back of your hand?" It is a subtle change, but if the your hand is up by your face and the back of the hand is toward the camera, the back of your hand will actually compete with your face for the viewers attention. But when the side of your hand is facing the camera, it looks relaxed and comfortable, and it keeps the focus of the portrait on your beautiful expression.
It all comes down to the fact that I love helping women experience their beauty and love themselves more. The portraits we create together are mirrors and memories that reflect how are incredible you are. I would love to show you what I see.
What kind of posing help would you like? Leave a comment and me know. I will add your topic to my blog series.
Love and Light,
