What's Your Favorite-
Studio or Outdoor Photography?
I love photographing in the studio. The simplicity of the landscape, the ability to shape and bend light in beautiful, expressive ways, the comfortable and peaceful atmosphere... it turns photography into a form of meditation even when the music is turned up and we are laughing and having fun. In the studio, I quickly find my way to the soul of the person I am capturing.
I still love photographing outdoors. I am a hiker and a backpacker. It’s hard for me to turn down any outdoor adventure. The beauty of the natural world is one of my greatest inspirations, and I love incorporating it into my work. Photographing outside is playful and beautiful in a different way. I feel my work outdoors is a reflection of the spirit of the person or the family I am capturing.
When you are thinking about where you would like to be photographed, here are several other things to consider in addition to style.
The studio offers:
-close, easy parking and comfortable seating (this is especially important if mobility is a concern)
-a clean bathroom
-air conditioning and heat
-protection from the elements (so our session can take place even if it rains- plus there are no mosquitoes)
-the ability to capture essence because the background doesn't compete for attention
Outdoor portraits:
-incorporate beautiful natural elements that create a scene- the entire landscape, including the people being photographed, are part of the portraits
-show personality through wardrobe and location
-have magical and unexpected surprises that enhance the experience (like cool breezes, amazing sunsets, bird song, or many other incredible influences from the natural world)
What do you prefer? Studio or outdoors? Soul or spirit? I think they are different experiences, but equal expressions of love and art. I would love to hear what you think.
Love and light,
Michelle Massey Barnes
